The Creation Of Enemies

Part III

CREATING ENEMIES continued                         (Go to Part I)

Efforts at domination do not stop when world wars end. The destruction of thousands of lives by the Palmer Raids and McCarthyism was much milder than the destruction of the Templars and the Illuminati, but the principle was the same. The powerful demonized the newest threat to their power.

The unjust attacks on intellectuals within the dominant centers of power cannot be compared to the horrors inflicted by the Inquisition or the suppression of the Illuminati. However, the frenzied rhetoric of the Cold War and the resultant violent deaths of at least seven million people in the emerging countries is very comparable, and, in sheer numbers, more violent than those early slaughters, and is part of the ongoing effort to prevent the masses from shifting allegiance to other leaders or ideologies.*

The destruction of other societies and their capital, out of fear of losing control, continues in the ongoing battle for resources and trade. The collapse of the evolving center of capital in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe is the most recent example. One need only listen to the rhetoric of enmity (Chip Berlet's "paradigm shift") to know who is, or will be, under trade assault, or even direct attack.

The "witch hunts" of the McCarthy era have a remarkable similarity to the Inquisitions. When the original targets of the Inquisition (Christian Cathars and Waldensians) were eliminated, the inquisitors turned towards searching for witches and Satanic cults to justify their existence and maintain their power.12 Those first accused of practicing the "black arts" and burned at the stake were rather defenseless people. But, as the hysteria continued, the accusatory finger pointed higher and higher and eventually pointed towards those in power. When these powerful became the target, the hysteria died down. After a respite the witch hunts would start again. In the same pattern, when McCarthy's "witch hunts" started destroying those in power, the powerful turned and destroyed him and the hysteria died down. Whenever the personal risk to leaders is high, they are motivated to defend themselves. This demonstrates that the process can be controlled and the public protected if the leaders ever decide they wish to do so.

Another example of propaganda to justify assault on a specific people was The Protocols of The Learned Elders of Zion. The Czarist (Russian) secret police created this alleged Jewish/Zionist master plan for world domination out of thin air in 1903 to condition the population for pogroms (government-sponsored riots) against Jews. English and French translations appeared in 1920, but in 1921 a correspondent for the Times, Philip Graves, proved they were forgeries. With the cooperation of a Russian refugee who had helped create the deception, it was shown that the forgers "plagiarized paraphrases from a satire on Napoleon."‡‡ This satire was no doubt a previous creation intended, as explained earlier, to demonize Napoleon because his egalitarian concepts of justice were a threat to the privileged groups. One of the primary jobs of an empire's intelligence service is writing history to create beliefs that further the goals of, and protect, whoever is in power.13

Though the fraud of the Protocols of Zion is well known, there are many instances of such hoaxes that are recorded in history and accepted as fact. Thus, one society will have its created version of history and another society a different history favorable to its desired view of the world.§

The use of the fraudulent Protocols by Hitler against the Jews to demonize them as an enemy is well-known history. However, the main thrust of Hitler's propaganda was against organized labor, which was poised to take over the government by the vote. The fascist takeovers of the governments of Europe were a sham.

Hitler was eventually put in power by the feudalist clique around President Hindenberg, just as Mussolini and Primo de Rivera were ushered into office by their respective sovereigns....In no case was an actual revolution against constituted authority launched; fascist tactics were those of a sham rebellion arranged with the tacit approval of the authorities who pretended to have been overwhelmed by force. The Fascist solution of the impasse reached by liberal capitalism can be described as a reform market economy achieved at the price of the extirpation of all democratic institutions, both in the industrial and political realm....[O]ne of the significant features of all its organized forms was the abruptness with which they appeared and faded out again, only to burst forth with violence after an indefinite period of latency. All this fits into the picture of a social force that waxed and waned according to the objective situation....It offered an escape from an institutional deadlock which was essentially alike in a large number of countries, and yet, if the remedy were tried, it would everywhere produce sickness unto death. That is the manner in which civilizations perish.14 (second emphasis added)

Note how the fascists were put in power by back room political deals, specifically for the protection of power brokers and to avoid democratic solutions, yet are recorded in history as only fascism. The preceding quotation was from economic historian Karl Polanyi, who recognized that desperate power brokers used the violence of fascism to eliminate their enemies and maintain their power. That this reality can only be found through in-depth reading, or by chance, is because much of history has been written to protect the power structure. (Emphasis added by owner of this website)

The famed march of the Black Shirts that supposedly put Mussolini in power took place three days after Italy had been effectively handed over to fascist control. Germany's famous Reichstag Fire was several months after Hitler had been given power in a secret January meeting of German power brokers.15 That fire was part of the campaign to depict the opposition as terrorists and enemies and weaken them before the national election that legitimized Hitler's rule. Because Germany lost the war, this particular attempt to write history is well-known. But there have been thousands of such "writings" of history that are little known because they were perpetrated by the winning side and were seldom properly recorded in history. As their primary job is to control the perception of the masses, such writing of history is the standard practice of government intelligence services.

The real target of the back room political deal in Germany was labor; it was they who were poised to take over the reins of the German government by the vote. When Hitler seized power in 1933, police were ordered to shoot key labor leaders on sight and within a year one hundred thousand politically aware persons were in prison.16 Witness the comments of a member of Hitler's cabinet, Colonel Walther von Reichenau, his analysis of the crisis in Germany could be used almost without changing a word to describe labor's position in America since 1980:

The trade unions have been smashed, the communists driven into a comer and provisionally neutralized, the Reichstag has surrendered its rights with the Enabling Law. The workers are keeping their heads down and, after the previous slump, their wage packets will be more important to them than any politics.17

Although there had previously been much rhetoric against, and individual persecution of, the Jews within Germany organized attacks against them did not start until November 9, 1938 "Kristallnacht" (The Night of Broken Glass.)18 The onslaught against the Jews by fascists was undertaken to repay the super-secret Thule Society (roughly similar to the U.S. Aryan Nations) for their early financial support of Hitler. The Thule Society organized Hitler's German Workers' Party and supported it financially. Their symbol was the swastika, and this became the symbol of German fascism. It is reasonable to assume that these fanatics were put into positions of power by Hitler because they were the power behind him.§§

But the persecution of the Jews has a long history; the Holocaust of World War II was just the climactic finale of almost two thousand years of hate rhetoric against the Jews, preached from the pulpit, supposedly for killing Jesus.** Just as the power of right-wing extremists in U.S. society ebbs and flows, the power of church right-wing extremists ebbs and flows. Where it was once common to persecute the Jews openly, the horrors of the Holocaust made it no longer acceptable. All who would advocate such a thing are now outside the permitted parameters of political or religious debate.

Today most Christians are very supportive of the rights of Jewish people. This stems from the positive statements of church leaders, as opposed to the previous violent rhetoric of the right-wing minority. Bamet Litvinoff, in his masterly work on the two thousand years of Jewish persecution, The Burning Bush, points out that the persecutors and supporters of the Jews have periodically changed sides. Each of these changes required the targeted population to be programmed either as an enemy or a friend, the necessary paradigm shift to gain a following that telegraphs the intentions of the power brokers. This again demonstrates that the process of creating enemies (or friends) is very controllable. Social scientists would do well to study how an entire society can be guided to commit such offenses against another innocent society. With nuclear weapons, even greater atrocities are possible.

Persecution of the Jews was primarily religious, with economic jealousy and theft of their property secondary. The Muslim/Christian standoff is religious, but control of resources follows religious control of populations. Witness the "Holy Alliance" formed by the monarchies and the church to defeat Napoleon; the later "Holy Alliance" against the Ottoman Empire that ended in the collapse of the Muslim economic world; and the role of religion in the seventy-year battle that ended in the current collapse of the Soviet Union.19 If a society cannot be subverted religiously or politically, typically the military is activated to remove that threat. In fact, religion and politics normally work in tandem (the restructured First and Second Estates) and the military is only an extension of these religious/political powers.20 Politicians have simply copied the religious practice of targeting the enemies of the powerful by labeling them as enemies of the people and accusing them of atrocities. This is a very primitive social survival mechanism practiced on a national and intemational scale.††

* Zaire, Indonesia, Mozambique, and several Latin American countries are places where the slaughter the result of successful efforts to prevent governments being established which would be outside the control of the centers of capital has been relatively more bloody than the slaughter of the Templars or the Inquisition. Other countries like Vietnam and Angola were able to keep their revolutionary governments, but their economic infrastructure was so shattered they could not be an example for others to follow. William Blum's CIA: A Forgotten History is the most condensed analysis I know of. As this book goes to press, it appears the final push is on to retake Angola. Vietnam, Cuba and North Vietnam are still on the list of very dangerous enemies. Here one should note that the only possible danger these countries could represent is ideological. They cannot be permitted to successfully organize and provide for their citizens. If they did, there would be an example for all the world to see.

† Chip Berlet points out that "political repression telegraphs its punches". Whenever someone, some group, or some country is going to be attacked, the public must be conditioned first (Chip Berlet, "Re-Framing Dissent as Criminal Subversion", Covert Action Bulletin [Summer 1992]: pp. 35-41).

‡ These Inquisitions lasted for four hundred years with approximately five hundred thousand inno-cent people being quartered, hung, or burned at the stake.

For how the Protocols evolved further to support fascism in Europe read F.L Carsten, The Rise Of Fascism (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1982), pp. 24, 29, 118, 184. The Thule Society's efforts to promote anti-Semitism through Hitler would likely have not had much effect on the world except for Henry Ford, through his Dearborn Independent newspaper, spreading those Protocols to every comer of the world, and imprinting anti-Semitism into the world's mind (Pool and Pool, Who Financed Hitler?, pp. 3, 23, chapter 3).

§ The United States is not exempt. Even as U.S. academics were being silenced by McCarthyism, so the other side could not be told by professors or through literature, the CIA was planting stories in newspapers and magazines around the world (called "black ops"), and financing the writing of twenty-five to thirty books per year that thoroughly branded the other side as an enemy. (Stockwell, Praetorian Guard, pp. 34, 101). This was exposed in the 1976 hearings held by the Church Committee (U.S. Senator Frank Church) hearings. This is intended to be addressed in depth in my next book.

§§ Pool and Pool, Who Financed Hitler? pp. 7-8, 19-21. On June 30, 1934 (the "night of the long knives"), Hitler's security guards (the SS) rounded up people with influence who were considered a threat to Hitler's power and assassinated them. This left the most violent in positions of authority (Carsten, Rise of Fasdsm, p. 158).

We have covered some of the aspects of pogroms to take over Jewish wealth. Immanuel Wallerstein, The Modem World System, vol. I (New York: Academic Press, Inc., 1974), pp. 147-56, explains the theft of Jewish wealth and their expulsion from Western Europe. This is how Jews happened to be concentrated in Eastern Europe before World War II.

†† This is a standard method of preventing democracy from functioning. In the 1980s, the leaders of West Germany, Turkey, and Belgium must have sensed their control was slipping. They created a rhetoric of "enemies" and rounded up dissidents in much the same fashion as America's Palmer Raids in the 1920s, and the McCarthy scare of the 1950s (Edward S. Herman and Gerry O'Sullivan, The Terrorism Industry [New York: Pantheon Books, 1989], pp. 221-22, 224-28). When the Cold War began, in step with America and Europe, Japanese power brokers launched an assault on opponents too far to the left of them politically who might gain a following.
